Waltham Miniature Railway

Terms and Conditions for the Carriage of Passengers

Running Days

  • Public running takes place on Sundays from 12 noon until 4 pm, from the beginning of April until the end of September.

  • We also operate on Wednesdays during the school holidays, and on Bank Holiday Mondays at Easter, May Day, Late Spring and August, as well as on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

  • Please note: Days and times may vary without notice.

  • Public running is subject to suitable weather conditions, the availability of sufficient volunteers to operate the railway, and the availability of suitable serviceable equipment.

Tickets

  • Tickets may only be purchased at the station. Prices may vary from time to time, and prices for special events may differ from standard running days.

  • Tickets are valid for one ride only and are non-refundable, however they may be used at any time during the current calendar year in which they are purchased, except for special events. Tickets cannot be carried over for use in subsequent years.

  • Each ride starts from the main station, runs around the track, and returns to the main station. While the route is normally the same, it may be varied at the descretion of the signaller and there is no obligation to cover any particular section of track.

Passenger Safety and Comfort Whilst on the Train

  • On sit-astride coaches, passengers must face the direction of travel. On sit-in coaches, passengers must remain seated properly, with their feet inside the footwells.

  • Passengers must sit upright and keep their feet on the footboards or within the footwells throughout the journey, as appropriate for the coach type.

  • Passengers must not stand, lean out, take photos or selfies while leaning from the train, or reach out to touch anything alongside the line while the train is in motion.

  • Passengers must remain seated until the train has come to a complete stop at the station.

Specific Rules for the Safety of Children on the Railway

  • Babies in arms are not permitted to ride on this railway.

  • At their own discretion, passengers may carry babies using an approved baby papoose-style carrier.

  • Small children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

  • Unaccompanied children may only ride if they are able to sit safely with their feet placed firmly on the carriage floor or footrests.

  • Station staff will advise you if they believe that your child is unable to ride safely.

  • The safety of small children is paramount. They may not ride if we are not satisfied that they are secure.

Site Access

  • Public access to the site is limited to the station, the viewing areas, and the Garden Gauge Railway (when in operation). All other areas are off limits unless visitors are accompanied by a member of the society.

Antisocial Behaviour

  • GCMES will not tolerate abuse or antisocial behaviour towards our staff, all of whom are volunteers. Anyone behaving in this manner will be asked to leave the site and may be escorted off the premises if necessary.

  • We reserve the right to refuse admission to anyone we consider likely to cause disruption or create a safety issue while using the railway.
